Ambulance accessibility

Individuals with disabilities who use wheeled mobility devices, service dogs or other large pieces of assistive technology are often unable to bring their devices with them to the hospital due to inaccessibility of emergency medical services.

LINC Design developed and conducted a user research study among emergency services and individuals with disabilities in Allegheny Country. The survey targeted emergency medical service providers and individuals with disabilities and sollicited feedback on existing system difficulties. It also sollicited feedback how to improve EMS services and explored the feasibility of these opportunities. Based on study findings LINC Design generated conceptual solutions and proposed changes to EMS systems to optimize ambulance accessibility across the user population.

LINC Design’s report and final presentation to Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) was used to communicate strategic changes for improving EMS access to people with disabilities.

LINC Design follows the activities of the EMS Safety Foundation to stay posted on potential areas of research and development to make EMS travel safer for all.
